Computer Designer - Resume Example + Feedback
- Summary: Computer Designer with 5+ years of experience designing and improving computer hardware for embedded and industrial systems. Comfortable working cross-functionally and moving designs from concept to prototype.
- NovaTech Systems - Computer Designer (2021-Present): Designed a new single-board computer for an industrial gateway product, coordinating with firmware and mechanical teams and supporting the project through release.
- Created schematics and PCB layouts in Altium for multi-layer boards and worked with suppliers on parts selection; helped reduce cost and improve reliability across several revisions.
- Brought up prototypes and performed validation using lab equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyzer) and basic scripts; documented issues and worked with the team to resolve them before production.
- Education/Skills: B.S. Electrical Engineering, San Diego State University. Skills include Altium, KiCad, basic Verilog, Python, board bring-up, and general debugging.
Overview
- Quantify outcomes (performance, yield, cost) and add baselines so impact is clear.
- Clarify scope and constraints (board specs, interfaces, power, thermal, compliance) to show seniority and complexity.
- Tighten generic phrasing with specific deliverables, ownership, and results tied to release/production.
Suggestions
Rewrite to include concrete board specs, your ownership, and release outcome. Example: "Designed 6-layer ARM-based SBC (2x GbE, 4x USB, CAN, Wi-Fi) for industrial gateway; owned schematic-to-bring-up; shipped Rev B to production (5k units/quarter)."
The current line says you designed a board, but it does not show complexity (interfaces, processor class, layer count), what you personally owned, or whether it shipped.

"Designed a new single-board computer for an industrial gateway product, coordinating with firmware and mechanical teams and supporting the project through release."
Add measurable cost/reliability results and name the mechanism. Example: "Optimized BOM by consolidating PMIC + passives and qualifying 2nd-source regulators; reduced BOM cost 8% and improved RMA rate from 1.4% to 0.7% over two revisions."
"Reduce cost" and "improve reliability" are strong, but without numbers, timeframe, and what changed, reviewers cannot judge impact or decision-making.

"helped reduce cost and improve reliability across several revisions."
Specify the type of validation (signal integrity, power, EMI), key tests, and pass/fail criteria. Example: "Executed bring-up checklist (power rails, clocks, DDR training, PCIe link); captured scope traces and root-caused a 120 mV ripple issue to layout return path; fixed in Rev A1."
Saying you used lab equipment is expected for this role; the differentiator is what you validated, what failed, and how you solved it.

"Brought up prototypes and performed validation using lab equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyzer) and basic scripts; documented issues and worked with the team to resolve them before production."
Tighten skills to align with computer design deliverables and add depth markers. Example: "Altium (constraints, diff pairs, impedance), KiCad (basic), Verilog (testbenches), Python (manufacturing test), board bring-up (DDR/PCIe/USB), standards: IPC-2221, IEC 61000-4-x (as applicable)."
The skills list is broad but shallow; adding qualifiers (what you can do in each tool/area) makes it more credible and keyword-complete for hardware/computer design roles.
