IS Security Scientist
- Security Scientist with 4+ years supporting SOC analytics and detection engineering; experienced in Python, Splunk SPL, and basic ML for anomaly detection across endpoint and network logs.
- Built a Python-based anomaly detection pipeline on Splunk events to identify unusual login patterns and reduced false positives by ~15% after tuning.
- Created and maintained 30+ detections in Splunk (SPL) and Sigma, improving coverage for common attack techniques and supporting weekly threat hunting.
- Partnered with IR and IT teams to investigate high-severity alerts, automate enrichment, and document playbooks for faster response.
- Implemented a lightweight risk scoring model for user behavior using multiple signals (VPN, EDR, IAM) and presented results to leadership to guide prioritization.
Overview
- Quantify scope and business impact with clearer baselines (volume, time saved, incidents prevented).
- Tighten technical specificity (features, model type, evaluation method) to sound more scientific and reproducible.
- Replace generic outcomes ("improving coverage", "guide prioritization") with concrete deliverables and measurable results.
Suggestions
Rewrite to specify data scale, method, and evaluation. Example: "Built an Isolation Forest + rules hybrid in Python on 120M Splunk auth events/month; cut false-positive rate from 8.2% to 6.9% (15.9% relative) while maintaining 92% recall on 6 months of labeled incidents."
"Reduced false positives" is good but currently lacks baseline, timeframe, model approach, and how you validated you did not miss true positives. Adding these makes the work credible and measurable.

"Built a Python-based anomaly detection pipeline on Splunk events to identify unusual login patterns and reduced false positives by ~15% after tuning."
Replace "improving coverage" with mapped techniques and outcomes. Example: "Authored 34 Splunk detections mapped to MITRE ATT&CK (T1110, T1078, T1059, etc.); generated 18 confirmed findings/quarter and contributed 6 new detection gaps to backlog closure."
Coverage claims are hard to assess without what techniques you covered and what the detections produced (findings, reduced dwell time, fewer missed incidents).

"Created and maintained 30+ detections in Splunk (SPL) and Sigma, improving coverage for common attack techniques and supporting weekly threat hunting."
Add concrete automation details and response impact. Example: "Automated alert enrichment (WHOIS, VirusTotal, AD context) via Python SOAR actions; reduced triage time per alert from 12 min to 7 min across ~400 alerts/week."
The bullet lists activities (investigate, automate, document) but does not show what you built or how it changed SOC throughput/SLAs.

"Partnered with IR and IT teams to investigate high-severity alerts, automate enrichment, and document playbooks for faster response."
Specify the model type, features, calibration, and decision usage. Example: "Built a logistic regression risk score using 14 features (impossible travel, new device, MFA failures, EDR severity); calibrated to a 1-100 score and increased analyst acceptance rate of escalations from 55% to 73%."
"Lightweight risk scoring" is vague; security scientist roles expect clarity on modeling choices, features/signals, and measurable decision improvements.
